Waking up and getting things going in the morning, I looked over to see Anthony sleeping in a newborn pose.
Isn't he cute?!
rest stop
creepy, bright red bug
We saw this after seeing a HUGE ant.
TEXAS
After Anthony had such a hard time in Colorado, we had to re-adjust our return route to Washington.
We couldn't go through any high elevation passes, and figured that we'd do best to stay near good medical facilities in more populated areas.
We didn't want to go through very much of Texas or New Mexico or Arizona or Nevada.
Too much heat that Anthony can't handle either.
So, we went through a little bit of Texas.
I think they're standing on the wrong side of the statue.
Texas had signs everywhere that said the left lane is for passing only.
We laughed at this guy.
Dallas, Texas Temple
When planning our trip, we knew we wanted to visit temples.
So I highlighted cities with temples with pink.
I never marked Dallas because we never thought we'd be traveling through there!
The day we were going to drive to Dallas, I remembered there's a temple there.
It was such a good thing too.
This temple has another unusual beauty, and it ended up being Josh's favorite.
There were so many stars on businesses and homes in Texas.
This was at Tom Thumb, a grocery store.
We were kind of lost in the store, until we found that it's a branch of Safeway.
We bought way too much here.
They had canning lids for less than 1/4 what they normally cost.
So, I bought a case of 36 boxes.
Not smart with an already-cramped car, but worth every sacrifice!
Waiting for me to come out of the store, Lilly decided to braid her hair for the first time.
She did a braid crown and did really well!
While we were in Dallas, we got the oil changed in the van, and had it checked for any issues.
While waiting in the really nice dealership, there were crickets everywhere!
Ewww
Live and not live
We noticed that the freeways of Dallas are held up with a southwestern orangey cement overpasses.
They were decorated with cream colored stars, and were so pretty.
I loved seeing how something functional could be made to be aesthetic.
**Another side note, it was fun to see the different colored highways around the country, according to local rock.
In Nebraska, I think, the back road we were on for several miles was WHITE!
Other places had tan or red cement.
I'm used to black asphalt or gray cement.
Another two side notes about the south...there was so much humidity in Alabama, that grass is very green and lush without sprinklers!
Actually, Gary's neighbor who uses sprinklers, has a yard that doesn't look as good as his neighbors' yards.
Also, when we drove through Utah, we noticed church buildings all over, easily located by their white spires.
And temples!
In the South, the land was dotted with similar-looking buildings, but they were other Christian churches.
The noticeable difference was that the Southern ones had crosses on them.
OKLAHOMA
rest stop
The "forest" at the rest stop is nothing like our forests in Washington.
Picnic shelter
In Oklahoma, we stayed at Lake Murray. This was a place that was beautiful, had very friendly hosts, and amazing water/mud to play in. It also had fire ants, but we were careful to avoid those.
The lake was close to civilization, but felt like it was very remote. The way camping should be!
